After being invited several times to go to the local PPSV (Professional Photographers of Sacramento Valley) meetings, Mark and I finally made it last night…(thanks to Barton and to Randy Borel some really awesome guys here in town) we just didnt have time to go before with starting a business and keeping up with jobs, editing, putting albums and storyboards together as well as keeping ourselves on a learning curve within our field and have a life!
We went on a night where there was a speaker/teacher Karen Speirling who showed us how to paint using Corel and a Wacom tablet. I know some people were pretty bored or uninterested in it but I really caught a vision for it…when I was younger I loved to draw and I find Photoshop as I watch Mark use it, to be somewhat cumbersome. I toyed with the idea of getting a wacom before but couldnt think of why I would need it! Now I can see something stirring in me! Not sure if it is something that I can contribute something new to our business or not at least not until I can get a wacom and start trying! I think I am willing to try tho!
So anyway…we ended up staying till the end of the meeting which went on for quite some time after the speaker finished her segment. The last portion was really interesting! They had a panel of 5 photographers who judged a number of photographs and fine art. Wow they were tough! A really neat gal we met named Rose had a couple of photographs up there and she was real nervous about it…as they critiqued them I was thinking WOW they are really hard on the pieces. Rose’s pictures were unbelievable! I could see what they picked out and commented on for all the items and it helped me to see what the Nationals will be looking at. So it was real interesting to see what they look at and what they like and dont like…But honestly I thought alot of Rose’s shots!!! They did too they just had a few comments to help her for her next try…
Dont know what I would bring for C&C but I think I would be nervous too! But it is good to take constuctive criticism so you can learn to be better! Oh and it is done anonomously they dont know whose work they are judging.
So okay looks like I am going to be doing some research and keeping an eye on some sales for Corel and Wacom tablets in the next couple of months! Wow Corel is selling it together as a bundle!! Wohoo! Gonna have to look into this!

Sounds interesting — maybe I should check into it too. Glad you had a great time. ~Carolyn (Dalip is doing fine — back to work. When it was so hot here, Dalip would go around without a shirt. One evening at the kitchen table, I was looking at him and then I said, “Is that your heart beating there?” He said, “Yes.” Without his sternum, I can see his heart beating…….I can’t stand to see that now. Since he has mechanical valves, Eric hears them clicking. I never have heard them but I’m not ‘looking’ to hear them either. Take GOOD care of your heart.)
Wow, nothing like getting your creative juices flowing! Sounds like you are in for a lot of fun to come:) Blessings on your efforts, you may discover latent talent:) God bless you both, Gerrie
:yes:Wow…I can’t wait to see where God takes this new vision of yours!!!!!! I will be eagerly waiting to see…Love ya, Kerri…Is Mark continuing to do well? Praying for you and your beloved family–Paula:heartbeat:
the wacom tablet is very nice with the painter bundle… it does wonders.
Are you nuts?! LOL! Corel Painter has been know to break up families its so stinking hard to do! If you want to paint, get a brush a canvas and really paint.
You can get a free download of Corel Painter on their site to try out and drive yourself crazy for a month and see if you STILL THINK you want to go on. Its like going through Dental surgery trying to paint with a digital wacom tablet, the pain of it all…its bringing back those bad memories, I have to go take a Asprin now…
I am glad you enjoyed PPSV. It is a fabulous opportunity to get together with others in your trade!!
Previously, I worked on manga comics with a Wiacom tablet – and I loved it! Right now I’m using a mouse – but that’s okay! Think I’ll buy one for myself for home use… I haven’t used Corel in TEN years. Is it as good as or better than Photoshop?
Andrew was doing drawings and paintings with his mouse and was so good. Then for Christmas he got a pen and a tablet (unsure if it was Wacom). So when he gets back from Seattle, I will ask him how he liked it. Andrew turned in the ones he did with the mouse and an Artist said they were so good and drawing/painting with a mouse is like drawing/painting with a bar of soap.
be blessed,
~michele
Glad to hear you went to your local group! I have learned SOOOOO much my from local groups, and the PPA as well. They are really quite affordable for the education you receive! Keep on going! It’s the best way to keep your business fresh and new!!
