  • Every newlywed should read this wonderful article!

This is an excellent article that I ran across in an email just now. I really thought it was worth posting so here ya go.

I wish I had read something like this when I first got married. Mark and I have been married 27 years now and the first few years were definitely fraught with these situations. What a great gift to be able to recognize some of those things that undermine relationships in the beginning!

Here is a link and an excerpt.

      Newlywed Ambush
Uncover two secret saboteurs of your happiness.

Tom and Laura came to see us just nine months after their wedding. They had swallowed the happily-ever-after sugar pill whole and were now feeling queasy.

“Before we got married we couldn’t bear to be apart,” Laura said. “I thought we’d do even more things together once we were married. But now Tom says he needs more space. It’s like he’s not the guy I married.”

See ya on Monday….just finishing up the Todd album and waiting for Mark to finish editing Angela and JD’s beautiful Carmel wedding so we can get a slideshow going.

  • ((KERRI)), YOU AND MARK NEED TO PRINT COPIES OF THAT AND GIVE THEM OUT TO YOUR NEWLYWEDS, HONESTLY. I WISHED I HAD HAD THIS ABOUT 4 WEEKS AGO. MY MOTHER-IN-LAW DIED. WE WENT TO HER HOME. MOST OF THE FAMILY OF TOMMY’S I HAD NEVER MET WERE THERE. I FELT SO BAD BECAUSE WE FUSSED LIKE 3 TIMES WHILE WE WERE THERE, ONCE EVEN OUTSIDE OF THE FUNERAL. I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS RAISED DIFFERENTLY. FOR EXAMPLE, HIS FAMILY MEMBERS KEPT TRYING TO GET ME TO LET MS. MERCEDES PLAY IN THE FUNERAL HOME, RUN HERE AND THERE. ONE YOUNG MAN WAS EVEN TURNING CARTWHEELS IN FRONT OF THE CASKET AND DOWN THE CENTER OF THE AISLES! I COULDNT’ BELIEVE THAT!!! AND THINGS, LIKE HIS FAMILY WANTED TO RIDE IN A LIMOUSINE TO THE BURIAL SITE. THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STRONG CONVICTION TO ME, THE WHOLE LIMOUSINE THING. I PERSONALLY THINK A FUNERAL IS NO PLACE FOR A LIMOUSINE. FORTUNATELY, WHEN I DECLINED TO RIDE, THEY ALL DECIDED NOT TO, THIS SAVED ANOTHER FUSS I’M SURE, LOL. AND THEN SOME OF THE GIRLS KEPT TELLING ME TO JUST LET MS. MERCEDES GO AND PLAY, TO “CHILL” AND QUIT BEING SO PROTECTIVE OF HER. THAT IS MY NATURE!!! THERE WAS A LOT MORE TO IT WHILE I WAS THERE, BUT THIS WAS LIKE THE HIGHLIGHT. THE FUNNIEST I THINK WAS WHEN TOMMY’S AUNT CAME IN. SHE MADE A PREJUDICIAL COMMENT THAT I FOUND VERY INSULTING TO ANOTHER RACE, SOMETHING LIKE “THERE’S ANOTHER (INSERT RACE HERE) GOING TO SIT HOME AND DRAW A CHECK, AND THEN 5 MINUTES LATER SHE WAS READING THE BIBLE OUT LOUD TO US, ROFL! I WAS LIKE HOW FUNNY!

ANYWAYS, THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION! THIS WAS MY FIRST TIME MEETING A WHOLE SLEW OF IN-LAWS, RELATIVES, ETC. AT LEAST WITH MY FIRST HUSBAND, HIS WHOLE FAMILY WAS NUTS, LOL, NEVER MET THEM ALL, LOL, WAS ONLY MARRIED TO HIM 6 MONTHS, WAS ALL I COULD STAND, THANK YOU, JESUS, ROFL!

    LOVE YOU, GIRL!

  • hahah that article made me laugh cause i’m guessing it’s true? im not married or anything, but my boyfriend and i have been going through pre-engagement discipleship with an older married couple at our church, and basically, all those points in the article are what we talk about! :D

  • TGIF and have a great long weekend.

  • Thank you for posting this, it’s wonderful! And I bet it’s even MORE interesting when you get two people together who were married before…you have the stuff they grew up with PLUS the marriage roles and rules that got followed (or broken) before…. much food for thought, thank you! Gerrie

  • The Parrotts are excellent counselors. We did a Bible Study on marriage at church, and watched videos made by the Parrotts.
